Too bloody right they can! I reckon that it can sometimes give you a bit of an edge actually.
I once went to this ball and sat next to this stupid able-bod geneticist. He was quite a knob and when I started to talk to him about crip-pride and stuff he rolled his eyes at me and said, in the most patronising way, "stella, disability is NEVER a good thing and disability is certainly never glamerous."
Hmmm... for someone who thought i wasn't glamerous, he sure tried pretty hard to pick me up later.
I study Physics at Pembroke. I Stage Manage and am often found in the ADC Bar or Clubroom. I like indie music and sometimes go to Kambar on Fridays or Saturdays and Fez on Monday. I drink real ale, and frequent The Panton Arms, The Mill, and The Alma. I am disabled, but this doesn't trouble me much.

Don't underestimate our crip magnetism.

And, yeah Mumpy, crip magnetism is the best!
The 'lost and lonely' look stopped working 4 years ago ;)
