I have just finished a chemistry assessed practical, and largely due to the skill of my lab assistant, I almost certainly got full marks. This is a shame because it was a manipulation (rather than planning observation or interpretation) which i cannot put towards my final mark.

It is amazing how effective "more, more, bit more, STOP!!" is in titrating...

Sorry for lack of decent posts - same reason as before: School + Hypersocialising + Webcomic obsession = no blogging. I have also been away from Ouch for way to long...

Anyway. I am currently alternating between periods of elation and manic deppression. This is screwing with my mind and my life. So:

I am happy because:

I got good exam results and am doing well at school.
I am applying to Cambridge.
I have lots of friends and am socialising a lot.
I have found some new webcomics to read.
I have a cool blog.
The girl I really want to go out with is single and actually talks to me.

I am deppressed because:

I got shit exam results yet I am still top of my class in Physics and Chemistry.
I am applying to Cambridge.
My close friends are wierd and fcked up people. The people I want to be more friendly with probably just pretend too like me.
I am spending too much time online and not enough time socialising.
No one reads my blog.
I am doing nothing about the fact that the girl I really want to go out with is single and actually talks to me.

(Apolagies for the lack of posting - Start of term, and time spent catching up with friends)

On wednesday evening, my friends' band had a gig at a bar in Oxford, and I agreed to go (because they're bloody good). Being a) crippled and b) a geek, I don't get out that often, and indeed have never been to a gig before, so I was a bit nervous about the whole "no parents, no friends" thing - my two friends who were meant to go with me had other commitments, so I really would be going solo. Anyway, my dad drops me off outside and I go in. It's a very nice bar - well lit, comfy sofas, more like a cafe - but it's deserted. I see some stairs going down, and the barlady nods when I point at them. ("F*CK" I think). At the bottom of the stairs there is a big bald bouncer who is very enthusiastic and helpful and gets my money out for me.

I go in, and see a mass of people, most of whom I know, in a cosy low-cielinged red basement. My mate Ben is on the stage alone singing a really nice song, named after the band (Where I'm Calling From). Then someone hugs me (!) - it's Tom, we are WICF's biggest fans, and know nearly all the lyrics! I'm a bit overwhelmed by it all, so go and sit at the bar, where I see more friends (and would be girlfriend). The bouncer leaps past (literally) and excitedly tells me the tiger beers are only £1.30 - OMG someone thinks I'm 18+!

The music is fab - of course - and I dance and sing along - what a prat I must look. So all is cool. When WICF finish, I (yep me) organise for drinks to be bought by an 18 looking girl, and by one for Ben, which I drop (hehay). I get pissed on less than a bottle (w00t) and give the rest to Tom.

The next act is a blues guy (who sadly had no audience of his own). I go up top to get some fresh air, and guess what, I end up conselling my would-be gf (there is nothing going on here, just my wishful think) on her recent break up with possibly the stupidest guy I know. Such is life...

The headlining band, Jabberwok - psychadelic funk, are truely awesome, and are quite big in Oxford. However WICF managed to pull a bigger crowd. Wahoo, we rule.

I really like this venue, but it has stairs. I don't know what to think about this because it's a pain in the arse and illegal, but there never going to fit a lift in and I don't want to be a suing git and make them pay loadsa money. It's a lose-lose situation. Stairs suck. Advice please?

IKEA!

For my bithday I was promised a trip to Ikea. My birthday was in april. That shows just how busy I am :).

Anyway, off we went this morning to Brent Park. It's a very easy journey - A40, M40, A40, North circular, Ikea car park - and took only 1.15 hours. We arrived at about 11.15, just over an hour after it opened, and guess what? ALL the blue badge spaces were taken. And its a Monday FGS! In fact the entire car park was full, and we had to park miles away. I am not happy, cos its a huge store, and I wanted to conserve my energy.

So, I walk in to store, and what do I see? Stairs! It's OK, there's a lift. But it's out of order! I ask a yellow shirted worker if there's another way upstairs, and she tells me that there's a flight of stair in front of me! Duh! Someone else points to a combo-locked door with a felt tip sign saying "Wheelchairs and Pushchairs Only". I don't bother pointing out that I am neither...

So I enter the store, bybass the showroom and trolley point, so i take one from a helpful employee. The store is big. and busy - where do all these people come from, and shouldn't they be at work? My Mother freaks. Luckily I had already made a list of everything I needed to buy, so I wound my way through the maze picking up what I wanted. They didn't have the magnets for the crip friendly magnetic noticeboard i wanted which annoyed me.

We finaly got to the self-service warehouse (how un-crip-friendly can you get?), and I set about looking for my Forby stools and Trotsig footstool (aka blow up pouffe) I wanted. I can't find them so I accost a worker who was ever so helpful and even offered to push my trolley for me ( ;) ). It turns out they don't have the blue denim cover i want. The man is very helpful but no, I can't order it, and no the pc won't tell him when it'll be instock. I have to buy the black polyester one instead.

We go to pay. More problems I won't bore you with (seriously boring). Then we look at the restaurant. It's full, noisy and SHIT. Buy a crappy sandwich. Leave.

Except, you can't (physically) take the trolleys into the car park. The loading area is so busy we decide to carry the stuff to the car, and hope someone offers to help. No one does.

God that was stressful

And then I find, everything, even the desk lamp, requires assembly WITH SCREWS!!!! AAAAARGHHH!!

Holiday!

It's been a bit hot recently so haven't got round to writing this till now. Sorry.

I have just spent two weeks in a farmhouse in France in the middle of nowhere near La Rochelle (west coast), followed by four days in Britany, near Vannes. We flew to Nantes with, for the first time since the first low-cost airlines, BA. I had totally forgotten how nice flying BA is, and even more so now with online check in. Amazingly a nice airport official let us queue jump to check in hand luggage seeing as the Young Gentleman (me) was disabled. This was very welcome seeing as the airport was extra crowded thanks to the strikes at other London airports - we were at gatewick. They were also great with my folding bike with stabilizers - even let the air out of the tires for me. Very shortly after arriving we were sitting in the first class lounge, thanks to my Dad's regular buisness flights, reading freed copies of Time and New Statesman, with free sandwiches as well! What style!

The house we were staying in was huge. Truely delightful. I spent a lot of time reading, playing monopoly with myh brother, and lazing in the hammock - bliss. We did some sightseeing - which meant car trips - which meant music of my dad's choice - Simon and Garfunkle, Cat Stevens, Leonard Cohen, Van Morrisen - fantastic. We also listened to Radio Nostalgie, which played both french and english songs from the sixties and seventies. My Dad (being french) knew the words to all the french songs!

Britany was fab - I long to return to do some sailing. I enjoyed regular lunches of gallete (savory pancake) and cider. I drank quite a lot of cider and got quite drunk at the hotel on our last night. So did my parents!

Overall the weather was good - sunny, not too hot, and I swam in the sea twice. I also taught my family to play bridge, and received my exam results. (Looks like they looked favourably on my physics practicle :)).

I'm going away tomorrow *sob* till the very end of August. I will miss reading everyone's blogs.

I am off to france with family and plan to spend lots of time reading, mainly physics books! I hope everyone has a fab summer.

I am sorry about the lack of posts, but summer is always a busy time. In the mean time you can read my truely horrible over long UCAS personal statement:

The sciences, physics in particular, have always interested me as I have always had a desire to find out how everything in the universe works, and why things behave the way they do. For example, why does a pendulum of a set length always swing at the same rate regardless of its mass? Physics appeals to me because physics alone can describe the laws of the universe in a simple and elegant way; and it will be physics that will hopeful solve some of humanity’s biggest problems such as finding renewable energy sources. I enjoy investigating problems experimentally as well as solving problems using theoretical and mathematical methods. I also enjoy physics because it often comes up with new and interesting challenges.

I enjoy reading about physics and have read books by prominent Physics authors and lecturers such as Gribbin, Feynman and Close; and I have attended lectures on subjects such as Relativity, Lasers and optics, and particle physics.

I find physics research a particularly dynamic and exciting area, and I keep track of what is happening by reading New Scientist regularly. I am especially interested in nuclear and particle physics, as subatomic particles are the basis of the entire universe, and I believe research into this field will eventually shed light on the Unified Field Theory. For the option module of my Physics AS exam, I have taught myself the material required for the Nuclear and Particle Physics option, as this appealed to me more than the other options on offer. I am also interested in nanotechnology and its uses in quantum computing, and the possibility of Fusion Power. I am very excited about the new fusion research facilities that are being built in Europe, as this, along with LHC at CERN in Geneva, will be a fantastic resource for European Physicists. After graduation I hope to go into research, hopefully in a theoretical field, and would enjoy working there.

I am also interested in links between science and technology and business and enterprise. I have attended a course at Begbrook Science Park on how science and enterprise is related.

Next year I will be helping out in physics classes lower down the school as part of the community service project at my school. I enjoy explaining physics to other people, and think this helps my own understanding.

I also have many extra-curricular interests. The theatre has always been a major part of my life, and I have been a member of Oxford Youth Theatre (OYT) since I was 14. I have played a role in three plays with OYT, as well as several at school, and have also spent a year in the OYT marketing group. I am a longstanding member of the OYT Member’s Committee, and have regularly contributed to the group’s termly magazine. This year I have been part of the production group, working backstage, operating lights and acting as stage manager. I particularly enjoy stage managing despite the fact it requires a great level of responsibility and organisation.

I have spent a fortnight with Pegasus Theatre on a work experience placement in their administration department. During this period I learnt more about the working environment and gained important work related skills such as time management and teamwork.

I hope continue working back stage with theatre groups whilst at university. I also enjoy going to the theatre to see plays of all types, and modern dance. I am particularly interested in physical theatre, and ways in which multimedia can be combined with drama and dance.

Another key part of my life is sailing. I have been sailing Challengers at my local reservoir for three years, and won the Best Novice award at the UK Nationals in Cardiff last year. This year I came sixth in the English National Championship. Challengers are three-hulled boats, or trimerans, designed specifically for disabled sailors of all abilities. They are fantastic to race in and the Challenger circuit is very competitive. There is currently a campaign to make the Challenger a paralympic class, hopefully in time for London 2012. My other sporting interests include Chess and Wheelchair Basketball.

For the last year I have been part of the Envision Group at my school. Envision is a charity that supports sixth formers with charity and environmentalist projects. I was part of a group that organised an acoustic rock concert for charity that was held in February. It sold out and we managed to raise over £300 pounds for Arco Iris, a Bolivian charity that gives support to street children in La Paz. We hope to repeat the event early next academic year.

It's all about painting a good picture :).

I'm ranting cos I'm hungry

Today I told Chris Page I had nothing to be militant about. Not true. I have just bought a rather nice looking fruit bar from Holland & Barrett. Unfortunately I cannot open it.

Nor can I open much else for that matter. These days everything is shrink wrapped and has super extra security mechanisms to stoop psycho poisoning food and crips eating it. Has no one realised this is discriminatory and is preventing us from eating independantly.

If I wasn't so hungry I'd go on hunger strike. Except no one would notice. Oh what shall I do?

Hair cut

I dislike going to the barbers. This because I flinch whenever scissors go anywhere near my ears. This scares the hairdresser. However, having put off cutting my hair for about three months, I finally decided that my hair was far too long, and getting a bit embarrasing. I am fed up of having curly hair.

Anyway, going to my local hairdressers (A cut above) is normally a straightfoward afair. I cycle along sidestreets, cross a busy road at the traffic lights, get some cash from the bank, and lock my bike outside A Cut Above. Easy. Except today the cash point was fecked. So I had to cycle all the way along the parade of shops to get to the other bank, on the pavement, cos i'm too chicken too cycle on busy roads. and then i had to cycle back again. By that time there was a huge queue...

Still, the hairdresser was really nice and patient and for once tottaly unphased. Wahoo!

I now have very short STRAIGHT hair. Neat

Fruitstock: an innocent festival

Hey there! I've just got back from Fruitstock in Regents Park - a friendly music festival that's free for nice people :). Fruitstock is organised by the nice people at innocent ltd (little tasty drinks), and promotes love, smiles and healthy stuff like smoothies and yoga. The music included jazz, gospel and norwegian folk rock (yey). I was given a free flower outside the flirting tent, and I learnt about keeping chickens and rabbits in eglus. It was all very NICE.

I must appolagise for not blogging for so long, and that includes not reading anyone elses blog. Sorry sorry sorry. I have been very busy on work experience at my local Theatre doing dull admin stuff 9.30-5.30. I promise I will write about it soon. :)

Talking of music, I want to mention a few recent discoveries (and one rediscovery).

Firstly, yes I am a tad so on the uptake, but I really love Magic Numbers. Everyone, go and listen to Forever Lost on their site NOW.

Secondly, there is a small band called Lucky Jim. They are very good, and a times sound like Bob Dylan and at others like Leornard Cohen. I am sure it's deliberate.

Thirdly I wanna thank Stella for introducing me to The Lucksmiths. Awesome

Last night I went to a party. Last night I got very drunk. Last night was possibly the best night of my life. Last night I acheived Cripple Nirvana: "I am a Crip but I don't give a fsck because people I've never met before are accepting me for who I am..." (- either that or people didn't realise I'm a spaz and though I was just very very pissed (that has happened)).

Yeah. One of my friends has links with one of the Oxford Colleges and managed to hire out a pavilion on one of the sports fields for the evening. He also knows far too many wierd and wonderful people for his own good and a fantastic number of awesome bands. So we have a hundred or so people aged 14-24 (or so) sitting on a field outside a pavilion (lit only by UV and fairy lights) getting drunk, stoned and listening to music. The style of dressed ranged from DJ's and crossdressing to punk and truelly undescribable via perfectly normal. Absolutely fantastic evening that combined all the ingrediants of perfect happiness - good music, good weather, good booze and (of course) good friends.

Today it is far to hot once again. I've just been shopping and have come home with a truely awesome Fat Face top - "Better a bad day on the water than a good day in the office" - and REM's Automatic For The People. Whilst writting this I am listening to Man on the Moon - a fantastic song.

As Fat Face says "Life is out there" so go enjoy it!

Sixth form ball

Sorry this post is so late after the event, but I was hungover on sunday, then went to York for the open day on monday. It is now tuesday and I still have a headache :)

First things first, as always I failed spectularly in pulling anyone - and that's not say I didn't try my damn hardest (after a few drinks that is). The problem is most of the girls I know are not single or not looking.

Apart from my failures at immitating Romeo, the ball was fairly cool. In the end I did wear a tie with my DJ so SCREW THE DRESSCODE! People commented that a tie is way more individualist than a bow-tie. It was great to see all my scruffy friends in smart suits and stuff, and all the girls in fantastic ball-gowns.

I started the evening using one of my stylish black straws but shortly found that the bottle was longer than my straw so gave up and just drank straight from the bottle ignoring the fact the more i drunk the more likely it was that i'd spill it everywhere. Which I did. And I got too drunk. After two beers.

Indeed I got so drunk I decided to dance to the crappy music the crappy dj was playing.

Road Trip - Visiting Universities

I have had a very busy weekend driving around the North of England. I had intended to come home yesterday, but got distracted! I am so tired.

Anyway, having returned from Reading on Friday afternoon, I set off almost immediatly for the Leeds Open Day Saturday. That was followed by Durham, and the Lancaster. I intend to write about all four shortly (ie when I am not too tired and have done all my homework).

One important lesson learnt this weekend is never (ever) to sleep by a motorway in hot weather.

Unfortunately I missed most of the Murray game but managed to catch the fourth set, which was quite exciting. I look forward to seeing Murray play next year.....

Artist Wanted

[Yes, I posted this on ouch!, so what?]

As you may know I am a bit of a webcomic freak, and due to the complete lack of webcomics about crips (please enlighten me if I'm wrong), have decided to write my own.

I have ideas for characters and quite a few plot lines, but due to my disability (CP), I cannot draw to save my life.

I am looking for an artist would be willing to work with me to publish a comic on a MWF basis or similar, and would enjoy drawing about late teenage/student crips and non crips. The main themes I would like to write about are relationships (or lack of), Geek stuff, music, and discrimination (I am of course fairly un pc, so anti-crip jokes may be common).

For examples of cool webcomics, google Real Life Comic, Mac Hall, Questionable Content or Built for Comfort.

My Exam Papers must scare Examiners

I've just finished my maths exam (w00t)!

I always wonder what my examiners think when they read the slip of paper saying I use a scribe. In this latest paper the marker will find a page of my own scribblings in between the pages of my scribe's neat handwriting. This occured because I got fed up of dictating rough workings. So, the marker will inevitably ask:

"Why does an A grade A level maths student have the writing of a two year old?"

And no one (I mean no one) other than me can read my handwriting.

It is still too HOT!

I wore sandles today which was stupid because I can't cycle in sandles.

On the subject of Open Days, it's rather infuriating all the extra work I have to do emailing ahead about accesability and arranging to meet the various Disability Advisor people. and I have to go to Leeds twice because the disability people AREN'T THERE ON THE OPEN DAY. I would rant but it's too hot.

AB teenagers don't realise how much of a dos they have compared with me.

Today was way too hot. Like ridiculous. So I've done bugger all all day sides from half an hour maths revision (tops) and a trip to Oxfam to buy a suit for the sixth form ball next fortnight. Oh yes, I was also almost run over by a driver not looking where he was going. I think seeing a seventeen year old riding a bike with stabalisers shocked him a bit so he didn't apolagise. I've spent most of the day reading blogs, New Scientist and the totally fantastic QC.

Anyway I will try and write some more relevant posts soon in an attemp to live up to my badly chosen name. I should probably change it to "The endless ramblings of a hopeless teenager". Anyway [my most overly used word] what with uni open days coming up and then the Ball, I should have enough to rant about!

I don't know why but I love that phrase. Life is pretty good right now: the weather's good, my lessons are easy, I've been hanging out with lots of cool people and me and few others are about to start organising a second "Acoustic Aid".

In March we organised an acoustic rock concert in school to raise money for a Bolivian charity called Arco Iris and raised over £300 (w00t). Hopefully we'll raise more money this time... Anyway organising events such as visit is SOO fun, despite all the hard work.

This summer is going to be really busy for me, but should be good fun.

It is incredible just how many crips blog! I have made a list of my favourites. I hope I haven't missed off the one crip who's realised that the answer to all our problems is in fact to get out and about rather than to just sit around blogging and reading blogs.

I really do have a problem now as every day I feel a need to read Slashdot, the Ouch! messageboards, far too many webcomics, and now a dozen or so Crip Blogs. and I complain about not having a life. I am a really hopeless person.

I honestly thought that people had got beyond not invinting me to parties, but on Friday many of my friends went to a party to celebrate the end of exams, and no-one invited me. Even my best friend didn't take the hint after me asking about it whilst playing monopoly that afternoon. Even me saying "No-one's invited me" didn't help.

Either people really haven't got to grips with me being a crip yet, or I am a total social reject and no-one really likes me. Or they dislike me acting like a complete fool when drunk! ;)

Exams (a disability success story) [wow]

I am fairly knackered as I have just had 15 hours of exams in four days. Luckily nothing went seriously wrong. In the past, computers have crashed, or not turned up, or overclocked, or something, but this year it went fairly smoothly.

Over the last year I have been trying to increase the amount of extra time I recieve in exams to 50% as the diagrams at AS level are much harder to describe than previously, and I must say dictating A level Further Maths is soo fustrating. Thankfully the exams boards came to their senses and awarded me the time. However they did not look kindly on me using an assistant in my Physics practicle so I am set to loose ten percent of those marks (Die EDEXEL DIE!!). The director of studies at school was told by Edexel to talk to JQA and told by JQA to talk Edexel. Edexel then suggested I studied Psychology instead of physics! Interestingly, JJ Thomson, who discovered the electron, never did any experiments himself because he was so clumsy.

The downside of having extra time is that I have stupidly long examms: 4 and a half hours for Physics Chemistry and history. However I only need half that amount of time for Physics for some reason! It also meant hardly anyone was around when I finished :(.

Unfortunately for me, the two longest and most difficult exams (Chemistry and History) were timetabled for the same day; that meant unless history could be retimetabled I would have NINE hours of exams in one day. Thankfully someobody else realised how stupid that would be, so I got me way and spent about 26 hours in isolation.

Overall, apart from all the exams being bunched up in one week, everything went well, as the school showed a surprising amount of flexibility.

Hello all

Exams are over (w00t), and I have wifi on my laptop, so I have no excuse not to start blogging again. I enjoy blogging, so in theory there will be some regular posts but to be honest I can't promise anything as I lead such a stupidly busy life.

I haven't blogged for ages, and am starting again on a new site (cos it's less hassle to use blogger), so I will give a brief introduction to my life...

I am 17, have CP and am just begining studying for A2s at a mainstream secondary school. I am about to apply for university to do physics which should be fun. I will probably write about political injustices relating to disability and why being a crippled teenager tottally sucks. I am also way toO geeky which doesn't help me intergrate into society. I tend only to blog when I am either angry or deppressed, so bear that in mind when judging me. I am not quite as pitiful, lonely, crazy, hopeless, unfortunate or deppressed as I make out!
